Tips on playing with bold pattern

Tips on playing with bold patterns:
  • When mixing your plaids like Kelly, opt for two contrasting prints. For a perfect pair, one should be smaller (or busier) than the other in contrasting, but complimentary colors. A great way to start is with a smaller black and white check, then layer on colored plaid.
  • Other prints that go great with plaid: stripes, polka dots, and leopard print!
  • Don't forget accessories! They're a great way to incorporate this trend in your ensemble.

Plaid Layering Love

Breaking the rules, Kelly takes a more bold approach to the plaid trend by layering two patterns together! To mix things up, she opted for a leather skirt and finished the look with classic loafers. Don't be afraid to play around with scarves—drape around your neck, wrap it loosely, or pull it around your shoulders as a wrap for extra warmth!

Classic Plaid Cape

Classic Plaid Cape

Capes or ponchos (whatever you like to call them) are the perfect layering essential for fall. This one with its chic black and white plaid pattern, is ultra versatile—perfect for work, weekend brunch, or a dinner date. Warning: If you're one of those gals who is always cold during the cooler months, you'll never want to take it off! Here, Jess paired her cape with a classic white boyfriend button down, dark jeans, high-heeled booties, and a loose side pony complete with a bow for a classic, feminine look.

Two Ways to Wear Plaid for Fall

Boots, sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes, football, and crisp Autumn air—hooray! Fall is here! And so is our very favorite trend, which seems to be only getting better—plaid!
No matter your style, whether it's classic, preppy, eclectic, or even a little edgy, you can take advantage of this trend to make it your own. (Whether you like to play by the style rules, or break them!) Our go-to destination for all things plaid this fall is Target, and our Fashion Editor Jess Keys and blogger Kelly Larkin of Kelly in the City teamed up to show off two easy and fun ways to wear their favorite plaid items.

10. Pencil Midi Skirt

The midi has been trending for a while, but now it’s back with buttons, zippers, and leather. It’s all about the hardware and texture.
Pair it with...a mock neck sleeveless crop, slicked back pony, and bold clutch for cocktails and convo with your bestie. Or tuck in your go-to button-up, pull out those cute peep toe heels, and march with confidence (even during an awkward run in with your ex at Starbucks).

9. Statement Bag

Be bold and reach for that oversized bright fuchsia tote or furry clutch. It’s all about the handbags this year and the crazier the better. Too often we play it safe with black, white, or neutrals. Have some fun with your everyday accessory! My personal favorites are this and this
Pair it with...the outfit you wear at least one time a week to work and really need to spice up so your coworkers don’t start calling you “Red Sweater Girl’ behind your back.

8. The Slip Dress

The slip dress is everywhere and on everyone from Calvin Klein to Celine and Rihanna to Jennifer Lawrence. Now the slip dress can seem intimidating because of its clinging, slinky silhouette. But trying an A-line version of this trend is just as chic and a much easier wear.

Pair it with...an oversized sweater and the mules you’re already rocking. Or a crossbody bag with plenty of hardware, heels, and a leather jacket. I promise you’ll look like the coolest chick at the bar.

7. Oversized Stripes

Don’t be afraid of an oversized stripe. Whether an outrageous color or silhouette, this is a fresh new take on the traditional.

Pair it with...a matching piece, such as a pegged leg pant or pleated maxi skirt to make a bold fashion statement. Or a flirty tank top, your cherished ankle boots and standby denim jacket, while drinking a cosmo with your newly acquired man-bun-wearing friend.

6. The Mule

This is not your grandma’s shoe. The mule is here to stay, whether you’re ready or not. Go for a heel or a flat, snakeskin or suede and give this trend a chance.
Pair It With...the ripped jeans we both know you paid too much money for, your quilted leather jacket, and aviators. Or a textured pencil skirt and printed blazer for a casual office look, giving your feet a break from all those stilettos while still looking sharp.

5. Trench Vest

The trench coat will always be a classic staple in in all of our closets, but this year it’s trending in a fresh sleeveless silhouette. Whether you’re running to brunch or heading to a meeting, this vest is a perfect layering option to step up your favorite outfit.
Pair it with...converse, a tunic dress, and oversized sunglasses after a few too many mimosas at brunch. Or brush off that classic white button up and baby doll black heels for a polished work look.

4. Bomber Jacket

Bomber Jacket

The bomber has recently taken over the fashion world, but this year it takes on a new twist in unusual colors and fresh silhouettes. Whether oversized or embroidered, it’s all about the details in 2016.

Pair it with...the only pair of black jeans you can count on in your wardrobe, lace up booties, and a bold clutch for the art show you’ve been dying to go to. Don’t be afraid to throw it over a sexy wrap dress with wedged sneakers for an unexpected sportswear look.

3. Matching Sets

Forget everything you know about not wearing all one color, and give this sophisticated trend a shot. From blazers to jumpsuits, to culottes and caplets, you’ll be the chicest girl at the office.

Pair it with...Bite Beauty’s $24 Matte Cream Lip Crayon in a bold sexy color and snakeskin flat sandals for brunch at your favorite bistro. Or rock your staple trench coat with sky high nude heels to lengthen your legs and give you the girl boss attitude you need to conquer the day.

2. Off-the-Shoulder Neckline

Bare those beautiful collarbones, ladies! From the runway to everyday street style, off-the-shoulder tops and dresses are here to stay. Try in a bright color or bold print to spice up your everyday look.
Pair it with...a prized oversized statement necklace if you’re feeling a bit shy about those cold shoulders. Or if you’re feeling sassy, adorn yourself with some oversized bangles, and an up-do and work that dinner date

1. Culottes

These are not the same as your gaucho pants from 2004. This sophisticated pant is all over the runway and soon all over you. From coffee to cocktails, strap on some stilettos and hit the ground running.

Pair it with...the blouse hiding in the back of your closet is just waiting to be tucked into the perfect culotte. While you’re at it, throw on a vest and those pointy toe stilettos, and DO YOU GIRL!

Fashion Trends to Expect in 2016

I t’s a new year, a clean slate, and the perfect time to update your wardrobe with quality pieces and fresh silhouettes for 2016. Be bold and reach for those snakeskin mules or silk bomber. It’s a new season, and you’re reinventing yourself and your closet, remember? Here’s a list of upcoming styles you will be seeing all year.

1. Accessorize:

The most important of all the fashion tips for girls is to sensationalize the outfit with favorite accessories like necklaces, hats, glasses, jewelry, scarves, socks and other head gears. Tasteful accessorizing can do wonders for a plain outfit; highlight your best features, update your outfit and enhance your type of style for the occasion from chic to elegant.  In fact you can change your outfit from casual to formal by just swapping accessories.

2. Invest in key wardrobe staples:

The Key wardrobe items like trendy high heels, a white shirt, trench coat, American diamonds and chic bags are staples for the closet of a Stylish Hipster.  They can be mixed and matched for any occasion and made to last all the four seasons. But choose carefully from the many to fit your sense of taste and nature. Also choose something you can wear for many years. Make them compatible with your accessories and mix them with each other to create a variety of newer styles.

3. Strive for your own perfection:

You spend all your time trying to look perfect, when it is not really needed. Many people look more stylish when they are not decked to perfection but allow a little quirkiness to shine through. For instance Kate Moss has looked amazing in her messy, careless appearance with a relaxed approach to fashion.

4. Flaws define you:

Instead of cribbing about your imperfections, own them as part of your individual beauty. Many girls have this false belief that the key to beauty is perfection. Many celebrities openly display their beauty faults as part of their self. Famous Top Chef’s host Padma Lakshmi does not shy away from wearing outfits that allow a view of the seven-inch scar on her arm. Mainly cause the scar hasn’t affected her modeling career.  Personality is best publicized in a style image that includes your flaws.  However, you should select clothes that highlight your positive features and minimize your unattractive facets.

5. Imitation fails:

Girls are encouraged to replicate the styles of popular personalities or follow the latest fads. Not a good idea if you are following someone with a dissimilar body shape or outer features. Stick to style tips that are flattering to your own appearance instead of blind imitation. What may look stylish and fashionable on your friend may not do the same wonders on you.

6. Simple is often best:

One of the most important fashion tips for girls is not to overdo the look and stick to minimal yet fashionable attire. Layers do not make you stylish; neither does an extreme infusion of jewelry and makeup. Many women have increased the allure of their outfit by working on their personalities. Their smile or confidence made simple attire more attractive.

7. Always be comfortable:

Comfort influences your carriage and manner of interaction. In a comfortable garment, your demeanor is relatively lighter and self-assured than when you are forced to deal with tight or ill-fitting clothes. Attire that makes you self-conscious is a cause for distress.

8. Keep yourself well groomed:

Dressing well is good for your style quotient; however your efforts will be in vain if you don’t pay attention to proper grooming habits. We are not referring to the best manicure or spending extravagantly on a modern hairstyle; you simply have to appear neat and clean. Your nails should be trimmed, your hair nicely combed and a clean bright face. Pimples are not the problems and can be ignored.

9. Use bright colors for emphasis:

Your favorite belt, skirt or scarf drenched or streaked in a pretty bright color can accentuate your most flattering part, be it your slim waist, supple legs or swan-like neck. Wear the bright colors wisely so your best features are emphasized to add to your stylish appeal. You can select the colors that are in-season to confirm you are keeping with the latest trends.

10. Be wary of hems:

A big fashion no-no is to brandish jeans or trousers with a long hem that drags on the ground. It leads to stained and worn-out hems. Thus, good pants are ruined and wearing them only degrades the effect of your stylish apparel.

Indie Brand Accuses Forever 21 of Stealing Its Designs

Back in March, Forever 21 was blasted by fans for stocking a rapey T-shirt and now, an indie brand is calling our the fast fashion retailer for allegedly stealing their designs, Fashionistareports.
Sporty and Rich, an online retailer and magazine, posted a photo on their Instagram of their hoodie captioned "when @forever21 copies you

Forever 21 is currently selling a sweatshirt that's very similar to the one pictured above, which Sporty and Rich reportedly released two years ago.

Emily Oberg, owner of Sporty and Rich and designer of the original hoodie, says that she wasn't shocked when fans alerted her to the similar design. "I feel like it's a known fact that they copy a lot of people's designs, especially the small guys who don't have a team of lawyers behind them," she told Seventeen.com
She also says that she's going to pursue legal action against the fashion retailer. "I am looking into it now. Before I wasn't going to but I feel like they always get away with stuff like this and it needs to come to an end. When you're a small entity and are the only one running your business, your creativity and ideas is all you have. [Your ideas are] invaluable and need to be protected," Oberg said.
Seventeen.com reached out to Forever 21 for comment and will update this post when a response is given.

Nasty Gal Accused of Copying Jewelry Designer Pamela Love's Designs

New York-based jewelry company Pamela Love is not having it with Nasty Gal right now. The accessories company is taking Nasty Gal to court for allegedly stealing three of their original designs: the Five Spike earringDagger Rosary necklace, and Talon cuff.

According to the Fashion Law, the company is suing Nasty Gal for "copyright infringement." You can see the copied designs here. Their report also says that Pamela Love is seeking up to $30,000 for damages. Love's lawsuit says that back in 2014, they reached out to the brand, asking Nasty Gal to take down the three designs from their website. However, they say the brand ignored their request and continued to sell the accessories based on Love's designs for a year and a half after. After this lawsuit was filed, the three designs immediately vanished from Nasty Gal's website.
Love's lawsuit states: "Nasty Gal is a serial infringer, relying on a business model that ignores the intellectual property rights of others." Love is requesting that Nasty Gal immediately remove and cease all sales of their merchandise and pay for their damages.
Nasty Gal has not yet released a statement in defense of their lawsuit.
