Tips on playing with bold pattern

Tips on playing with bold patterns:
  • When mixing your plaids like Kelly, opt for two contrasting prints. For a perfect pair, one should be smaller (or busier) than the other in contrasting, but complimentary colors. A great way to start is with a smaller black and white check, then layer on colored plaid.
  • Other prints that go great with plaid: stripes, polka dots, and leopard print!
  • Don't forget accessories! They're a great way to incorporate this trend in your ensemble.

Plaid Layering Love

Breaking the rules, Kelly takes a more bold approach to the plaid trend by layering two patterns together! To mix things up, she opted for a leather skirt and finished the look with classic loafers. Don't be afraid to play around with scarves—drape around your neck, wrap it loosely, or pull it around your shoulders as a wrap for extra warmth!

Classic Plaid Cape

Classic Plaid Cape

Capes or ponchos (whatever you like to call them) are the perfect layering essential for fall. This one with its chic black and white plaid pattern, is ultra versatile—perfect for work, weekend brunch, or a dinner date. Warning: If you're one of those gals who is always cold during the cooler months, you'll never want to take it off! Here, Jess paired her cape with a classic white boyfriend button down, dark jeans, high-heeled booties, and a loose side pony complete with a bow for a classic, feminine look.

Two Ways to Wear Plaid for Fall

Boots, sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes, football, and crisp Autumn air—hooray! Fall is here! And so is our very favorite trend, which seems to be only getting better—plaid!
No matter your style, whether it's classic, preppy, eclectic, or even a little edgy, you can take advantage of this trend to make it your own. (Whether you like to play by the style rules, or break them!) Our go-to destination for all things plaid this fall is Target, and our Fashion Editor Jess Keys and blogger Kelly Larkin of Kelly in the City teamed up to show off two easy and fun ways to wear their favorite plaid items.

10. Pencil Midi Skirt

The midi has been trending for a while, but now it’s back with buttons, zippers, and leather. It’s all about the hardware and texture.
Pair it with...a mock neck sleeveless crop, slicked back pony, and bold clutch for cocktails and convo with your bestie. Or tuck in your go-to button-up, pull out those cute peep toe heels, and march with confidence (even during an awkward run in with your ex at Starbucks).

9. Statement Bag

Be bold and reach for that oversized bright fuchsia tote or furry clutch. It’s all about the handbags this year and the crazier the better. Too often we play it safe with black, white, or neutrals. Have some fun with your everyday accessory! My personal favorites are this and this
Pair it with...the outfit you wear at least one time a week to work and really need to spice up so your coworkers don’t start calling you “Red Sweater Girl’ behind your back.

8. The Slip Dress

The slip dress is everywhere and on everyone from Calvin Klein to Celine and Rihanna to Jennifer Lawrence. Now the slip dress can seem intimidating because of its clinging, slinky silhouette. But trying an A-line version of this trend is just as chic and a much easier wear.

Pair it with...an oversized sweater and the mules you’re already rocking. Or a crossbody bag with plenty of hardware, heels, and a leather jacket. I promise you’ll look like the coolest chick at the bar.
